Three Tiers, One OEM: RDP Video Analytics Infrastructure for Indian Oil Corporation

IOCL deployed a three-tier RDP compute architecture for enterprise video analytics and industrial surveillance.

Industry: Energy, Government

Three product lines. Three compute tiers. One OEM. When Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL) — one of India’s largest public sector enterprises — needed an integrated video analytics and surveillance infrastructure, it required more than cameras and cables. It required an edge-to-management compute architecture capable of real-time analytics, continuous recording, and centralised monitoring across industrial environments.

RDP delivered all three layers: video analytics workstations for edge processing, recording servers for high-capacity storage, and management servers for centralised command. From a single Indian OEM, purpose-built for the operational realities of energy infrastructure.

The Challenge: Surveillance at Industrial Scale

IOCL operates refineries, fuel stations, pipelines, storage terminals, and strategic industrial sites across India. These environments are not office buildings. They are high-risk, high-security, always-on operations where surveillance is not optional — it is a regulatory and operational necessity.

The existing infrastructure needed a compute backbone that could handle three distinct but interdependent workloads:

  1. Real-time video analytics at the edge. Intelligent threat detection, event recognition, and anomaly alerts — processed locally, not in a distant data centre. Latency in a refinery surveillance system is not an inconvenience. It is a safety risk.
  2. Continuous high-capacity recording. Every camera feed, every angle, archived reliably with RAID protection. When an incident requires investigation, the footage must be complete, uncorrupted, and quickly retrievable.
  3. Centralised video management. A unified command layer that aggregates feeds, manages events, handles database operations, and provides the single-pane-of-glass view that security operations centres require.

No single product handles all three. IOCL needed a multi-tier solution — and a vendor capable of engineering, supplying, and supporting all tiers under one umbrella.

The RDP Solution: Three-Tier Compute Architecture

Tier 1: Video Analytics Workstation — RDP Sprint C7

ComponentSpecification
ProcessorIntel Core i7-12700 — 12 cores
Cache25 MB
GraphicsNVIDIA T1000 8 GB GDDR6
Memory16 GB DDR4 RAM
Storage1 TB SATA HDD
OSWindows 11 Pro
ChassisTower
Use caseVideo analytics and edge processing

The Sprint C7 sits at the edge — closest to the camera feeds. The NVIDIA T1000 professional GPU handles real-time inference for video analytics algorithms: motion detection, perimeter breach alerts, object classification, and anomaly recognition. Unlike consumer GPUs, the T1000 is rated for sustained professional workloads with certified driver stability — critical when the workstation runs 24×7 without restart cycles.

Tier 2: Video Recording Server — RDP ROCK XSR

ComponentSpecification
ProcessorIntel Xeon Silver 4210 — 10 cores
Memory32 GB ECC DDR4 RAM
OS storage2x 256 GB SSD (RAID 1)
Recording storage3x 8 TB HDD (24 TB raw)
RAIDRAID 0/1/5/6/10
OSWindows Server 2022
Network4x 1 GbE
Use caseHigh-capacity continuous video recording

The ROCK XSR handles the storage-heavy layer. Twenty-four terabytes of raw recording capacity with RAID protection ensures continuous footage archival without data loss. The Xeon Silver processor and 32 GB ECC RAM provide the headroom to manage simultaneous write streams from multiple camera feeds while maintaining system stability. ECC memory is non-negotiable here — a memory error during a recording write can corrupt footage that may later be needed for incident investigation or regulatory compliance.

Tier 3: Video Management Server — RDP ROCK XGR

ComponentSpecification
ProcessorIntel Xeon Gold 6230 — 20 cores
Memory64 GB ECC DDR4 RAM
OS storage2x 512 GB SSD (RAID 1)
Database storage4x 256 GB SSD (RAID 10)
Surveillance storage4x 2 TB HDD
RAIDRAID 0/1/5/6/10
OSWindows Server 2022
Network4x 1 GbE
Use caseCentralised video management and SQL database

The ROCK XGR is the brain of the operation. Twenty Xeon Gold cores and 64 GB of ECC RAM power the video management software, event database (SQL), and centralised monitoring dashboard. The multi-tier storage design separates OS, database, and surveillance data onto independent RAID arrays — so a database I/O spike does not slow down surveillance writes, and an OS update does not risk the event log.

The Architecture: Why Three Tiers Matter

LayerRDP platformRole
EdgeSprint C7Real-time video analytics processing
RecordingROCK XSRContinuous high-capacity surveillance storage
ManagementROCK XGRCentralised monitoring, database, event control

Collapsing all three functions into a single server is a common cost-cutting temptation — and a common point of failure. When analytics, recording, and management compete for the same CPU, memory, and storage I/O, the result is dropped frames, missed alerts, and degraded recording quality. IOCL’s three-tier approach ensures each function gets dedicated resources, dedicated redundancy, and dedicated failure isolation.

Why RDP for Enterprise Surveillance Infrastructure

IOCL’s selection of RDP reflects a procurement logic that extends beyond component specifications.

Single-OEM accountability. When three product lines come from three vendors, troubleshooting integration issues becomes a finger-pointing exercise. With RDP supplying all three tiers — workstation, recording server, and management server — there is one support number, one warranty umbrella, and one engineering team responsible for the entire stack.

Enterprise-grade security compliance. TPM 2.0 security, regulatory certifications, and genuine licensed OS platforms across all three tiers. For a critical infrastructure PSU like IOCL, audit compliance is not optional — and every component in the surveillance chain must pass scrutiny.

Long-term support. IOCL’s surveillance infrastructure operates 24×7 across multiple sites. RDP’s 5-year onsite warranty covers the full deployment lifecycle, ensuring hardware issues are resolved on-site — not through RMA shipping cycles that leave surveillance gaps.

The Outcome

OutcomeImpact
Surveillance capabilityIntelligent video analytics with real-time threat detection
Recording capacity24 TB RAID-protected continuous archival
Centralised managementUnified command centre with database-backed event control
OEM accountabilitySingle vendor across all three compute tiers
ComplianceTPM 2.0, licensed OS, enterprise certifications

For IOCL, the deployment delivered what industrial surveillance demands: intelligence at the edge, reliability in storage, and control at the centre. Three RDP product lines, one integrated architecture, zero vendor fragmentation.

The Multi-Product Advantage

This deployment demonstrates a capability that few Indian OEMs offer — the ability to serve an enterprise customer across workstations, rack servers, and management infrastructure from a single manufacturing line. The same capability that powers IOCL’s surveillance also serves state government digitisation and enterprise IT fleet modernisation. Different products. Same OEM. Same reliability.
